(Photo by Columbia Pictures/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe reviews are in, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the best-received MCU film since well, the last Spider-Man movie, No Way Home. We are now at four Spider-Man movies in the MCU, with seven more before that, with three other live-action variations of the character. All three, of course, were to be found in the multiverse-spanning No Way Home, a key part of its popularity. And, I think, we should also bring in the two Spider-Verse movies, huge hits that shouldn’t be ignored because of the fact that they are animated. For live-action, the Raimi trilogy is beloved, the next duology less so, and the MCU version has made billions. But how do they all rank against each other? Here are the critic and audience Rotten Tomatoes scores for each: So, what stands out here? Well, it’s pretty wild that, despite these stellar reviews, a 91% for Brand New Day is tied for the sixth-best Spider-Man movie, with 8 of 11 movies above a 90% score. (Photo by Columbia Pictures/Getty Images)Getty ImagesI am somewhat confused by the relatively low 67% audience score for the original Raimi/Tobey Maguire Spider-Man, which is generally revered as a beloved classic. I don’t recall any large controversy about the original, though Spider-Man 3 and its emo Peter were certainly a different story. I know Andrew Garfield is bummed that he was supposed to get at least a trilogy, and that didn’t work out, though he found redemption in No Way Home. We are avoiding the fact that Sony then went on to do a bunch of Spider-Man villain movies that did not feature Spider-Man at all, so I’m not even going to count them here. Sorry, Madame Web, you don’t count just because you had baby Peter Parker. And, of course, the Spider-Verse films are on top, with Into the Spider-Verse, Across the Spider-Verse and No Way Home all tied for a combined critic and audience score total. With entirely unique animation (which was the genesis for global smash KPop Demon Hunters) and a stellar Miles Morales story, they are an important fourth pillar of all of this, even if MCU Spidey gets most of the headlines. The third film should be another monster. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.
